1:1 Coaching

One of the most fun and effective motivational tools I have encountered is 'Goal Mapping', which works in a variety of coaching settings, and is particularly powerful in 1:1 coaching.

What is Goal Mapping?

Goal Mapping is a powerful technique for setting goals and then identifying the realistic steps you will take to achieve them.

What makes it so effective is the way it engages both your creative 'right brain' and your analytical 'left brain'. Often when we make plans we tend to use only the latter, more logical type of thinking. This is important, of course, because we need to 'think things through' and make sure what we're doing is viable.

But left brain thinking also overlooks the powerful motivational role that our subconscious mind plays in achieving our goals.

That's where Goal Mapping comes in.

How does it work?

I will take you through the 7 Steps of Goal Mapping. You will learn about the critical importance of positive thinking and the enormous difference it can make in our lives, including a brief explanation of the neuroscience that underpins it.

You will start by identifying your big goals - those personal peaks you want to climb - along with a timeline for getting there.

This could relate to a single specific area of your life - such as career, family, health or finances - or a combination of several or all of them.

You then work out what steps you need to take to achieve those goals, and the people and resources that can help you along the way.

Finally you depict that journey in visual form, by literally 'drawing a map' using colourful shapes, pictures and symbols that are meaningful to you.

It's this last step that is the key to Goal Mapping's effectiveness. Rather than ending up with a dry 'To Do' list filled with words and action points, you instead have a visually striking, memorable and very personal 'vision of success' that engages your mind on two levels. First, it's a succinct plan of action for your conscious mind to follow, and at the same time a powerful motivator for your subconscious mind.

Once the Goal Map is finished, you sign it, commit to it, and ideally put in on your wall to inspire you every day!

And no, you don't need to be able to draw! Colourful shapes and meaningful symbols are just as powerful. Most people haven't drawn anything for years. This really is for all ages and stages. It's transformational, liberating and serious fun.
